I resisted this graphic novel series based on the cover of this volume.
From the cover of this volume, you can tell that this comic book is a story about a couple and their baby. Now, the couple happen to b alien forms, But despite that, I was still uninterested in reading about domesticity or forbidden love.
Why This Comic?
After several recommendations, I reluctantly picked up this first volume. The first image almost turned me off of the comic completely. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a little prudish. That being said, the opening image of a baby being born made me feel like I was right about the comic all along.
I am happy to report that I was totally wrong about this graphic novel series.
What Is It About?
This series parallels (don’t laugh) Romeo and Juliet in a lot of ways. You have two groups of “people” at war with one another, but one member from one side of the war finds its way to a member of the other side of the war. They fall in love, they run away together, and then the ship really hits the fan, because they are actually in love. They are not just in lust. They have a family.
Thoughts? Like it?
This book is full of crazy creatures and interesting characters. The artwork is gorgeous. There are so many vivid colors, and even the gross stuff (which there is some) is a pleasure to look at.
This is definitely an adult series, as there are sex scenes and language.
My favorite parts of this series so far (I’m now into volume 4) are the parts where everything is boring. It’s interesting and kind of funny to the two trained fighters taking care of small delicate thing. The scenes where they’re talking about or doing laundry are ones that I find the most enjoyable.
If you liked Firefly, Mac and Me, Romeo and Juliet, Fifth Element, then you might like this.
*Just a side note here, it was really hard for me to come up with a list of things for the If/Then section of this blog post.
